Dad picked up a '64 GMC

Recommended Posts

My dad lean saled himself a old GMC that was left on his lot for years. Had a local dude in downtown LA get it running, it has a 307 iirc. Nothing special, just wanted it to run. I think it needed some head work to flatten it out, maybe a carb, gas tank, brakes where all redone and so far that's about it.

He has a new wood bed ready to go, but he is messing around with paint first. He had another local dude fix up some of the rust and fix some body panels but the guy didn't understand what my dad wanted, turned out painting it pretty vibrant red and gloss clearing it, was suppose to be matte. Having an old crappy car look shinny is just all wrong.

After some work on his own, sanding and fixing it the way he wanted, he realized it was originally teal. Or at least, at some point a long time ago it was teal. So now he is working on sanding it all to metal/bondo, primer, white, grey, then some rust color paint be it orange, red, golish, ect. Then he hits it with teal and wet sands the teal down till it starts to look like actual rust coming though. It's turning out really good actually. Some pix below:

Going to make the entire truck look that way?

Yup, he is about to paint over all of that in teal and then sand it away to match the bottom part he already did. Since most of that area won't be seen because the bed covers it that was his practice.

Looks like a Cuban paint job so far haha!

It's currently getting acid dipped to get rid of all the rust ect. Should have it back soon and now then will make it look old and rusted lol.

Guess I never put up finished pix here huh?

Full resto down the bars chassis. Acid dipped and powder coated chassis and then full up rebuild on that. It’s definitely not for everyone, but hey my pops loves it and that’s all that matters. Lol.

But... if clean is your style, this should be finished next month. And this thing is fucking tits. Long story short, the 383 they had in it wasn’t used as they couldn’t find the main caps in time, so they got a donor 400 block, massive stroker crank and custom pistons done up for it, so it’s 499.95 CI (lets just call it 500 cuz that’s a nice round cool number) and sounds like a fucking monster. We heard it run on the engine stand and boy o boy this thing screams. This will be such a bad ass ride!

Really should have made it its own thread, I’m just lazy.

It’s leaking coolant and trans fluid. So back to the shop it goes lol.

Yea it’s way to much dynamat imo lol. But not my car so o well.

And the GMC can tow, but probs not well. It’s way to low with no suspension travel, and I don’t know how much I would trust it with that much weight behind it. It works fine, but.... yea. lol.

I usually put dynamat under the carpet / interior pieces not under the car.  Never seen it done that way.

Yea, I’m not sure why they did it this way. Imo it’s just going to get rocks all stuck to it, and parts will likely got hot and melt from the exhaust. Shoulda done lizard skin on the underside I would think. But whatever. To bad that shit won’t ever come off either. Would need to sandblast it off lol.

It’s not “done” cuz it’s never “done”, but it’s enough to call good. They are working on betting some more molding and other misc pieces, but it’s home. To bad we don’t have tags till Monday so can’t drive it .
