DIY: Mustang 11-14 Sound Tube Delete

Recommended Posts

Hello FFM!

One thing that drove me a little nuts was the sound tube in the stock mustang. I was going to go with a kit Cooltech makes but I visited Autozone and Ace Hardware for the two parts I needed for $8 total.

You will need:

1.5" Plug HILLMAN Part #5418-1E

DORMAN HELP! Master Cylinder Gasket Part #42098

10mm Socket

Channellocks

Nail Clippers or rounded side cutters

BEER (Not pictured)

(Nail Clippers not shown)

Start by removing the 10mm bolt on drivers side fender holding the sound tube in place.

Pull the sound tube out of the firewall.

Install DORMAN HELP! Master Cylinder Gasket Part #42098 into the hole.

Use the nail clippers on the 1.5" HILLMAN Part #5418-1E Plug to trim down the "fins" This will allow the plug to tightly fit into the intake tube. Use Channel Locks remove the sound tube from the intake and install plug.

No more sound tube!

Less cluttered engine bay!

Thanks for looking!

It is and the interior is a little more quiet.

Until you add a Whiteline transmission bushing! Sounds like my sound tube is still in.

No problem. I plan to do a lot of simple DIY tutorials when I get around to them.

So I'm gonna be the noob and ask.  Why did you remove this?  What do you benefit from it?

Nice write up!  I feel like even I can do this.

Appearance reasons. Mine is still installed 'cause I don't care how it looks.

Nice write up, I'd do the same thing. Kind of a cheap gimmick IMO. A sound tube for a beast V8? Mine would definitely not have the stock mufflers, so a sound tube would not be needed.

Just a heads up my buddy did the same exact thing but cut the fins down way to much. It fit snug but we applied some RTV just incase. So if you mess up and cut it to short a little RTV is all you need.
