The DSLR market is enormous. I'm partial to Nikon though Canon makes top level stuff as well. I started out on a Nikon D3000 as a Christmas present and worked well for me as I learned. Last year I got my dad's D5000 when he picked up a then-new D7100. The differences in higher priced cameras isn't always the quality of the photos they take but mostly their speed. Higher-end cameras can auto-focus and snap photos much more quickly, as well as having many more features.

After choosing a camera you're going to need a lens(or twelve). Most cameras come as a kit and include a basic lens(18-55mm for example). Professionals laugh at people shooting with a kit lens, but if you're learning or better yet, taking nice photos with your kit lens, f***em. You'll probably want a zoom lens at some point, and those suckers can be pricey. I have a 55-200mm as well as a 70-300mm lens, one auto-focus(hand me down from my dad) and the other just a basic lens I got off of ebay.

I'm pretty big into photography as well, and shoot with Nikon. Nothing wrong with canon, it's just you start with one and then your stuck because lenses can't be swapped from Nikon to canon.

I don't have any of my own stuff yet (just a D70 and a decent zoom lens, forget it's mm), but I use my dads D2X and D800 all the time and absolutely love them, but they are professional bodies, so they ain't cheap.

A nice 800 dollar body tho, like any that grimace recommended would be good. Starting out, I would try and get a Costco deal. Like. A lens or two with a decent body for like 700 bucks. If you spend less you may not be happy... Don't want to spend 450-550 and be sad, when 35-40% more money could have made you happy ;)

I am pretty into photography, so if you need help with any of the terms or lingo, post it up and we will help ya out.

Any "good" dslr will take video (I have never once used any of our dslr's for video...).

And they are not that confusing. Honestly, mostly what I do, I use aperture priority. What that does, you set the f stop that you want, and it auto adjusts shutter speed for you. F stop is the size of the opening, which controls amount of light and depth of field (how blurry the background is, to put it simply).

There is a few things you need to learn, but all I ever adjust are where it's focusing, f stop, and ISO. If I am getting fancy with it like some really cool night shots, go to manual mode and also select the shutter speed manually to either over or under expose the picture. With those few settings, you can do pretty much whatever you want. So it's not that much to learn really. Just takes practice.

Learning photography is a lifelong endeavor so don't expect to be taught by people over the internet. Getting a camera you should focus more on lenses and a camera body that has good reviews. I rarely use video on my Nikon as well so don't worry about that too much.

Truth. It's impossible to learn over the Internet. We can teach you the lingo, but it comes down to time behind the shutter!

Mark post up some links to the deals your looking at and we can share feedback. Both of my Nikons have been discontinued so I'm not up to speed on current models.

Really play with the aperture, and pick up a couple filters, uv ray and a polarizer too. Find a photography course to take if you can and don't be scared to mess around with settings, that's the beauty of digital photography, just pop the card into your computer and see what works and what doesn't. Also always delete the photos from card via your computer and not while its in the camera. (I use a Nikon D1x).

This was in jasper national park a few years ago, you can see how the blurred background really draws your attention to the raven.

Dieselmax has good points. Filters are great. And yea mess with your f stop (aperture) makes for great depth of field pix. Also, D1X huh? Great old camera! That was my dads first digital camera, has GREAT color! But man, the megapixels are just too low. You should see an image from the d800. Full fx format, and like 32 megapixels and can push pretty much whatever ISO you feel like. It's amazing.
